Write up of Oparu’s Remember me by AXS!
On Jan. 18, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Oparu released a video for her new single “Remember Me.” Although the song that deals with dark and harrowing subject matter, it’s Matt Champagne-directed clip is surprisingly sunny. Eschewing the dark visual aesthetics that characterizes most music videos put out by electro artists, “Remember Me” is shot in board daylight and features warm color palette full of Earth tones. Still, the video’s bleak desert setting and the dark clothing worn by frontwoman Dianna St. Hilaire suggests a kind of darkness that sunshine can’t banish.
Oparu is a new project from Hilaire, who previously recorded music under the name Versailles. Though St. Hilaire has found success making excellent darkwave music as Versailles, she decided to take her career in a bold new direction in 2015. Under the name Oparu, St. Hilaire has teamed with legendary producer Kim Fowler to produce alternative rock-flavored synthpop that sounds like little else of the modern music landscape.
